O'Grady is a native of Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. The family was raised by her parents in Wheaton (Illinois) as well. She graduated in 1981 from Wheaton's North High School. The model appeared in commercials for a time prior to moving to Los Angeles. Her first assignment was modeling in the company of Montgomery Ward. She also featured in a variety of commercials. She starred in the 1988 romantic comedic film called She's Having a Baby.
