O'Neil joined O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when he was still in highschool. She advanced into the top 100 rounds because the judges were thrilled with her performance. O'Neil was given high marks from jury. But she was a victim of major defeats in the top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. Her score was in the bottom three, followed by the second place. This shocked the judges, and they advised that people choose Melissa who was the contestant with the best singing abilities. In spite of consistently impressive performance from then onwards, O'Neil never again finished in the bottom three. O'Neil's performance on September 7 in 2005 was such a dazzling performance that the judge Werner predicted the newspaper headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie, becoming the 3rd Canadian Idol. O'Neil received a phone call from Canadian the Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on winning Canadian Idol straight away.
